This is the most consequential comparison.
Microsoft 365 Copilot’s advantage is native work context. Work IQ can reason over a signed-in employee’s permitted emails, meetings, chats, files, people and relationships. Copilot can then act within Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams.

Copilot versus ChatGPT in Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Microsoft has the broader native productivity footprint. Copilot works across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, OneNote and other Microsoft 365 surfaces. It understands the open object and, with the paid work license, can bring in broader organizational context.
ChatGPT has narrowed this gap. OpenAI’s
ChatGPT for Excel can build, update and analyze spreadsheets inside the workbook. ChatGPT for PowerPoint can create and revise editable presentations in a PowerPoint sidebar. The ChatGPT plan matrix lists Excel and PowerPoint extensions with access or limits that vary by tier.
The comparison should therefore be made app by app:
Word
Microsoft Copilot has the clearer native advantage for drafting, rewriting, summarizing and editing within Word. ChatGPT can analyze uploaded Word files and connected sources, but there is not a symmetrical first-party Word extension matching its Excel and PowerPoint products as of July 27, 2026.
Excel
Both can work in Excel. Microsoft Copilot is integrated with Microsoft 365 identity, file context and Work IQ; it supports chat, plan and edit patterns inside current Excel experiences. ChatGPT for Excel is a genuine in-workbook product, not merely a file upload, and can build and update models.

PowerPoint

Copilot Researcher versus ChatGPT Deep Research
Both products can conduct multi-step web research and produce source-cited reports. Both can also use connected internal sources on eligible plans.
Microsoft Researcher can combine web and Microsoft 365 work content. It supports multiple models, including Claude options from Anthropic when an administrator approves the provider.
ChatGPT Deep Research can work from the web, uploaded files, specified sites and enabled apps. SharePoint and other connected sources can extend it into company information.
A fair test uses the same brief:

A dated consumer-product caveat
Microsoft has announced that
Deep Research in the consumer Copilot app will be retired starting August 18, 2026. Do not confuse consumer Copilot Deep Research with Microsoft 365 Researcher.
Research verdict

ChatGPT provides a strong general file workspace. It can inspect documents, analyze datasets, run calculations, create charts and produce new files. Projects can hold recurring context, while apps connect to external sources.

Both consumer products can create images and support voice experiences.
ChatGPT has the stronger overall creative ecosystem. Image generation and editing, voice with video on eligible plans, data visualization, interactive outputs and broad creation tools are central to the product.

Microsoft Copilot versus ChatGPT for coding
ChatGPT includes access to Codex according to plan. Codex can inspect repositories, edit files, run commands and tests, and support parallel or long-running software work.
Microsoft Copilot can explain code in a normal conversation, but Microsoft’s direct coding product is GitHub Copilot, which is separately licensed. Microsoft 365 Copilot does not become a repository coding agent because it shares the Copilot name.

Microsoft says in its

ChatGPT Business and Enterprise
OpenAI says in its
enterprise privacy commitments that it does not train on inputs and outputs from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and its covered business products by default. Enterprise adds stronger retention, identity, audit and compliance options.
Neither vendor’s statement means:
- every connector follows identical retention;
- an overshared file becomes safe;
- administrators can ignore subprocessors;
- prompt injection disappears;
