Runway locks out credit holders: subscription now mandatory

Runway users with unused credits can no longer auto-generate AI videos unless they have an active Standard plan. That’s based on a recent experience from a former paying user who, despite having credits left, was blocked from accessing the platform’s latest Image-to-Video feature.

The user, who had previously created videos with Runway and later canceled their subscription, decided to give the service another try. Their account still showed credits used in the past to generate AI videos. But when they tried to animate a historic photo of a dog next to a space capsule using the new Gen-4.5 model, they immediately hit a wall.

To put it mildly, that’s not exactly customer-friendly.

The user asked Runway to animate a black-and-white photo. The system analyzed the image and automatically drafted a prompt: the dog would move subtly while analog TV noise and scan lines swept across the frame.

Then the message appeared:

"Upgrade to use this model."

The AI chat wasn’t much help. Even after the user explicitly said they still had credits, Runway continued to refuse to generate the video.

According to Runway’s AI assistant, credits and subscriptions are separate systems. Credits cover the actual generation costs, but access to Gen-4.5 and other modern video models requires at least a Standard subscription.

That lines up with Runway’s current documentation. The company says Gen-4.5 is available only to Standard subscribers and above, while credits are then used to pay for each second of generated video. Gen-4.5 currently costs 12 credits per second of video.

For many existing users, that split feels unexpected.

For years, Runway positioned itself as a platform where users could spend credits to generate AI content. While subscription tiers have existed for a while, many former customers expected that leftover credits would remain usable for the same functionality—even after canceling a plan.

In practice, that’s no longer guaranteed. The newest video models now sit behind a subscription wall, meaning a positive credit balance alone isn’t enough to create new AI videos. According to current pricing, only a Standard plan or higher unlocks all video models, including Gen-4.5.

The situation highlights a broader trend in generative AI. More platforms are blending subscriptions with usage-based credits or tokens.

That can be confusing for users. A positive credit balance suggests generations are possible, while in reality access depends first on the right subscription tier.

From a business standpoint, this approach delivers predictable recurring revenue for AI companies. At the same time, it raises the risk that former paying customers feel shortchanged when previously purchased or remaining credits no longer unlock the same features as before.

Whether Runway will adjust its subscription structure in the future is unknown.
