Kazakhstan Hosts Major AI Film Festival With Two Million Dollar Prize Pool

From October 1 to 3, 2026, Astana will transform into a global hub for cinematic innovation by hosting the Astana AI Film Festival. This international event, showcasing films created entirely with artificial intelligence, represents a massive leap for the region's digital economy. The competition has already drawn an impressive 8,067 submissions from 125 countries, with the United States leading the pack and Kazakhstan securing a strong second place with 829 entries.

The festival is a cornerstone of Kazakhstan’s Year of Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, serving as a key component of the broader AI & Digital Bridge 2026 forum. Over three days, the capital will welcome festival finalists, an esteemed international jury, and global tech partners. In a move to democratize access to this emerging art form, all competition films will be screened for the public on the big screen at Chaplin Cinema, free of charge with advance booking.

The initiative is driven by a clear vision to establish Kazakhstan as a legitimate player in the global AI production market. Almas Zhali, Founder and Chairman of the Board of AAIFF, emphasized that the sheer volume of entries proves AI filmmaking has evolved from a mere experiment into a fully-fledged industry. To support this transition, the festival uniquely integrates venture capital alongside traditional awards. Winning teams will be required to register local legal entities and become residents of Astana Hub, effectively building a complete AI production ecosystem around the festival.

The competition structure is designed to reward both narrative excellence and technical mastery. The main program, themed “The Future Worth Living In,” offers a $750,000 prize pool, headlined by a $450,000 Grand Prix. Additionally, $250,000 is allocated to the Open Section, recognizing excellence in categories like Best Character, Best Directing, and Best Visual Language.

The credibility of the festival is bolstered by a heavyweight international jury. Confirmed members include former UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, representatives from China Film Group and the Beijing Film Academy, and prominent tech investor Balaji Srinivasan.

Furthermore, the festival has secured BytePlus, the B2B division of ByteDance, as its official technology partner. This collaboration ensures that 25 finalists will receive a one-year subscription to the DRAMAGIC content generation platform, complete with 60,000 credits. By combining substantial financial backing with cutting-edge computational tools, Kazakhstan is not just hosting a film festival; it is actively laying the foundational infrastructure for the next generation of global digital storytelling.
