Perplexity is free for core cited search. The standard US price for Perplexity Pro is $20 per month or $200 per year. For Max, monthly billing is $200 and the annual invoice is $2,000. Verified students and educators can buy Education Pro for $10 per month. Organizations can purchase Enterprise Pro for $40 per user per month or $400 per year, while Enterprise Max costs $325 per user per month or $3,250 per year.
Those headline prices are only the first layer.
Perplexity separates ordinary search allowances, advanced modes, file capacity, AI model access, media generation and Computer credits. Developer API use has its own usage-based bill. Taxes, local currency, app-store billing, promotions and negotiated volume terms can change what a customer pays.
The practical decision is therefore not “free or paid?” It is:
- Does Free already answer the questions?
- Does Pro remove a recurring research or file limit?
- Does Max unlock a valuable high-end capability or merely a larger allowance?
- Does a company need managed access rather than reimbursed personal accounts?
- Will Computer or API consumption create a meaningful second bill?
This guide answers those pricing questions. For the product itself, start with the
complete Perplexity guide.
Prices and plan descriptions were checked on July 24, 2026. The amount displayed at checkout and the usage panel in an individual account are authoritative.
Perplexity prices at a glance

Key pricing takeaways
- Free is not merely a trial. It provides the core answer engine with practically unlimited basic searches and small allowances for advanced modes.
- Pro is the best-value paid plan for most individuals. Annual billing saves $40 against twelve monthly payments at standard US prices.
- Education Pro delivers the main Pro experience at half the monthly price after eligibility verification.
- Max costs ten times as much as Pro. It is rational only when its higher limits, Computer allocation, early features or Max-only tools solve a measured constraint.
- Enterprise Pro is a managed workspace product, not just Pro billed to a company card.
- Enterprise Max can unlock higher capacity and advanced organizational controls, but its $325 monthly seat price requires a clear use case.
- Perplexity Computer uses credits. A subscription can include credits, yet substantial agent work can still create additional spend.
- Consumer subscriptions do not include Perplexity API usage. The API has separate billing and credentials.
- Published feature counts are snapshots. Perplexity increasingly describes some allowances as average use rather than permanent fixed quotas.
What does Perplexity Free include?
The Free plan provides the defining Perplexity experience: ask questions, search current web sources, receive cited answers and continue with follow-ups.
At the time of review, Perplexity’s comparison documentation listed:
- practically unlimited basic searches;
- three Pro searches per day;
- one Research query per month;
- limited file uploads;
- and restricted access to advanced models and media features.
These allowances make Free sufficient for several groups:
- someone comparing Perplexity with a conventional search engine;
- an occasional user checking a current fact;
- a student learning how to verify citations;
- and a professional testing whether Perplexity improves a recurring research task.
Free is not ideal when a workflow needs frequent Pro Search, repeated long research, many files, model choice, substantial media generation or dependable capacity during the working day.
What “practically unlimited” does not mean
It does not promise that every feature can be used without restriction. Basic search, Pro Search, Research, file analysis, image generation and Computer are separate resources. Abuse prevention, temporary capacity controls and product changes can also apply.
Judge the plan in the interface rather than extrapolating one “unlimited” label to the entire product.
What does Perplexity Pro cost?
Perplexity Pro costs:
- $20 per month on monthly billing;
- $200 per year on annual billing.
The annual plan saves $40, equivalent to two monthly payments. It reduces the effective monthly cost to about $16.67.
Pro expands the individual product with:
- much higher access to Pro Search and Research;
- access to supported advanced model choices;
- file analysis and larger Project capacity;
- Create and eligible asset-generation features;
- broader image and media use;
- and other premium experiences as available.
Perplexity’s newer help material often describes limits in terms of generous or average use instead of promising one immutable number. That is more honest than treating a dynamic compute product like fixed storage, but it makes plan comparison less exact. If a particular allowance is decisive, check the live usage panel before buying.
Who should buy Pro?
Pro makes sense when at least one of these is already true:
- free Pro Search or Research access runs out during useful work;
- model choice materially improves an established task;
- files and Projects are part of a recurring research process;
- the user creates source-led reports or assets every week;
- or the time saved comfortably exceeds $20 per month.
It is unnecessary when most questions are basic searches and the advanced allowance rarely runs out.
What is Education Pro?
Education Pro costs $10 per month for eligible students and educators verified through SheerID.
It is not a separate low-capability student chatbot. It is a discounted educational route to Pro features, with learning-oriented benefits and eligibility conditions. Verification can expire or require renewal, and availability can depend on institution and region.
Education Pro is a personal education plan. A university seeking institution-wide identity, administration, retention or contractual controls should compare enterprise or education deployment terms rather than distribute personal subscriptions informally.
What does Perplexity Max cost?
Perplexity Max costs:
- $200 per month;
- $2,000 per year.
Annual billing saves $400 against twelve monthly payments, bringing the effective monthly cost to about $166.67.
Max is designed for heavy individual use. It has included or expanded access to Perplexity’s highest-capacity research and creation features, Max-level Comet assistance, Computer credits, Model Council and selected early or preview capabilities such as Brain.
The key point is economic: Max costs $180 more per month than Pro. A feature list alone cannot justify that difference.
When Max can be worth it
Max can make sense for:
- a researcher whose advanced runs repeatedly reach Pro limits;
- a consultant billing for source-heavy reports;
- a founder or analyst using Computer for valuable multi-step work;
- a creator who uses Perplexity’s high-cost asset generation frequently;
- or an early adopter who can assign real value to Max-only access.
When Max is poor value
Max is difficult to justify when:
- the user has not exhausted Pro in real work;
- ordinary cited search is the main activity;
- Computer workflows are still experimental;
- a separate specialist tool already covers the expensive feature;
- or the purchase is based on the assumption that a dearer answer is automatically more accurate.
Start with one month of Pro, record the actual bottleneck, then compare the value of removing it with the $180 monthly difference.
Perplexity Pro versus Max
| Question | Pro | Max |
| Standard monthly price | $20 | $200 |
| Standard annual price | $200 | $2,000 |
| Core audience | Frequent individual user | Intensive power user |
| Cited search | Yes | Yes |
| Advanced search and research | Expanded | Highest/extended access |
| Advanced models | Yes, subject to current list and limits | Highest access, subject to current list |
| Projects and files | Up to 50 files per Project at review | Up to 500 files per Project at review |
| Model Council | No | Yes |
| Computer monthly credits | No standard recurring allocation at review | 10,000 at review |
| Selected previews and maximum features | Limited or later | Earlier/broader |
| Best reason to choose it | Best balance of capability and price | Proven need for capacity or Max-only tools |
The plan name does not override separate feature availability by region, platform or staged rollout.
What does Perplexity Enterprise Pro cost?
Enterprise Pro costs:
- $40 per user per month;
- $400 per user per year.
Annual billing saves $80 per seat. Perplexity says discounts may be available for deployments of 250 or more seats and for qualifying schools, nonprofits and government organizations.
Enterprise Pro adds a managed business environment, including capabilities such as:
- centralized billing and administration;
- SAML SSO;
- organizational knowledge access and connectors;
- enterprise data treatment;
- team Projects;
- larger file allowances than personal Pro in several contexts;
- and business security and compliance features.
The seat costs twice as much as personal Pro on monthly billing because it buys organizational control, not merely individual search capacity.
Enterprise Pro is appropriate when
- company material must remain under an organizational contract;
- access needs to be provisioned and removed centrally;
- employees need approved connectors to internal sources;
- administrators need workspace visibility or policy;
- or reimbursed consumer accounts create offboarding and data-ownership problems.
It is excessive for an informal two-person experiment with no confidential data and no administration requirement.
What does Enterprise Max cost?
Enterprise Max costs:
- $325 per user per month;
- $3,250 per user per year.
Annual billing saves $650 per seat.
Enterprise Max combines enterprise controls with much higher capacity and access to Max-level products. At review, it supported up to 5,000 files per Project and 10,000 personal files, as well as a larger Computer credit allocation. Perplexity also says that purchasing at least one Enterprise Max seat can unlock selected organization-wide capabilities such as SCIM, audit logs, configurable retention and insights, subject to current terms.
This creates a useful mixed-seat option: an organization may assign Enterprise Max only to intensive users while keeping others on Enterprise Pro. Perplexity’s enterprise documentation says the two seat types can coexist in one organization.
Do not assume one Max seat transforms every Pro seat into Max. Organization-wide controls and individual feature capacity are different benefits.
Enterprise Pro versus Enterprise Max
| Decision factor | Enterprise Pro | Enterprise Max |
| Monthly price per user | $40 | $325 |
| Annual price per user | $400 | $3,250 |
| Primary value | Managed enterprise search | Maximum enterprise capability and capacity |
| Project file limit at review | Up to 500 | Up to 5,000 |
| Personal file limit at review | Lower | Up to 10,000 |
| Computer monthly credits at review | 500 | 15,000 |
| Advanced organization features | Standard controls | Can unlock additional controls under current terms |
| Best deployment pattern | Broad knowledge-worker access | Selected high-intensity roles |
The
Perplexity Enterprise deployment guide explains connectors, retention and governance beyond the seat price.
How Perplexity Computer credits work
Ordinary Perplexity searches do not consume Computer credits. Computer uses credits because it can execute a longer series of model, browser, tool and connector actions.
Perplexity defines 100 credits as $1. That makes one credit equal to one cent for pricing purposes.
Included credits by plan
The detailed credit table available at review showed:
| Plan | Recurring monthly credits | One-time promotional or introductory credits shown |
| Pro | No standard recurring allocation | Up to 4,000 |
| Max | 10,000 | Up to 35,000 |
| Enterprise Pro | 500 | Up to 8,000 |
| Enterprise Max | 15,000 | Up to 45,000 |
One-time bonuses can vary by account, promotion and launch period. Do not treat them as permanent plan value until they appear in the account.
Typical Computer task costs
Perplexity’s guidance grouped example work into broad ranges:
| Task class | Typical credit range | Dollar equivalent |
| Light | 100–350 | $1.00–$3.50 |
| Complex | 350–950 | $3.50–$9.50 |
| Heavy | 875–2,275 | $8.75–$22.75 |
| Mega | 2,400–9,800 | $24–$98 |
Ranges overlap because cost depends on the number of steps, models, tools, retries, media operations and connected systems.
An open-ended instruction such as “research everything and build the best possible launch” gives the agent no natural stopping rule. A bounded task—five competitors, three sources per claim, one spreadsheet, no outreach—improves both cost control and output quality.
Purchased credits, rollover and auto-refill
At review:
- recurring monthly credits did not roll over;
- purchased credits could remain available but expire after a year of account inactivity;
- auto-refill was off by default;
- users could set refill and spending controls;
- Max had a default additional-spend cap of $200 that could be adjusted, with a documented ceiling of $5,000.
These controls can change. Review the Computer billing screen before authorizing scheduled or unattended work.
How much could Computer add to the bill?
Suppose a Max user runs:
- eight light tasks averaging 250 credits: 2,000 credits;
- six complex tasks averaging 650: 3,900 credits;
- two heavy tasks averaging 1,500: 3,000 credits.
The total is 8,900 credits, inside the 10,000 recurring Max allocation shown at review.
Add one 4,000-credit mega task and the monthly total becomes 12,900. The extra 2,900 credits represent $29 if purchased at the standard conversion.
This is only an illustration. The correct budget comes from a pilot using the organization’s actual instructions and connected tools.
Is the Perplexity API included?
No. A Free, Pro, Max or Enterprise subscription does not create an equivalent developer API balance.
API products are usage-based:
- the Search API charges per request;
- Sonar models charge for tokens and search requests;
- Agent API tools have per-invocation or session prices;
- embeddings charge for processed tokens.
An employee can have Enterprise Max and still need a separately governed API account for an application. Conversely, API spending does not provide a Max consumer seat.
Perplexity annual cost comparison
| Scenario | Monthly choice for 12 months | Annual option | Annual saving |
| One Pro user | $240 | $200 | $40 |
| One Max user | $2,400 | $2,000 | $400 |
| One Enterprise Pro seat | $480 | $400 | $80 |
| One Enterprise Max seat | $3,900 | $3,250 | $650 |
| Ten Enterprise Pro seats | $4,800 | $4,000 | $800 |
| Nine Enterprise Pro + one Enterprise Max | $7,245 | $6,850 | $395 |
The mixed-seat calculation uses the published per-seat rates and excludes credits, tax and negotiated discounts.
Annual billing is valuable only when the product will remain in use. A one-month pilot can cost less than an annual discount on abandoned seats.
Regional pricing, taxes and app-store billing
Published US dollar prices are comparison points, not a universal final charge.
The total can differ because of:
- local currency;
- VAT, sales tax or similar taxes;
- Apple or Google app-store pricing;
- bank conversion fees;
- country-specific availability;
- promotional offers;
- and enterprise negotiations.
If price matters, compare the web checkout with the app-store total before subscribing. Buy through one channel only and keep a record of which provider controls renewal and refunds.
Can you cancel or change a Perplexity plan?
Consumer subscriptions renew until cancelled. Cancellation generally stops the next renewal rather than erasing the remaining paid access immediately. App-store purchases are managed through Apple or Google; web subscriptions are managed through the Perplexity account.
Upgrades, downgrades, credits and refunds can have different effective dates. Review the confirmation screen before changing a high-value annual plan. Enterprise changes follow the order form and billing agreement rather than consumer rules.
Which Perplexity plan should you choose?
Choose Free if
- you are new to Perplexity;
- basic search covers most questions;
- you use advanced modes only occasionally;
- or you have not yet verified that the product saves meaningful time.
Choose Education Pro if
- you qualify for verification;
- you use Perplexity for regular study, teaching or research;
- and an individual plan is appropriate for the information involved.
Choose Pro if
- Free interrupts useful work;
- files and Projects matter;
- you need frequent Research or Pro Search;
- or model and creation access are worth more than $20 per month.
Choose Max if
- you have measured a Pro bottleneck;
- Max-only or early features have concrete value;
- Computer is part of a high-value individual workflow;
- and the additional $2,160 yearly cost over annual Pro is recoverable.
Choose Enterprise Pro if
- several people need centrally managed use;
- internal content will be connected;
- the company requires enterprise data treatment;
- or identity and offboarding matter.
Choose Enterprise Max selectively if
- particular roles need maximum research, file or Computer capacity;
- advanced controls justify at least one Max seat;
- and a pilot supports the projected return.
A workload payback test
Estimate the net value of one completed, verified task: time saved minus checking, correction and agent supervision. The table shows how many such tasks must be completed each month to cover the seat.
| Plan | If one task is worth $10 | If one task is worth $50 | If one task is worth $250 |
| Education Pro, $10 | 1 | 0.2 | 0.04 |
| Pro, $20 | 2 | 0.4 | 0.08 |
| Max, $200 | 20 | 4 | 0.8 |
| Enterprise Pro, $40 | 4 | 0.8 | 0.16 |
| Enterprise Max, $325 | 32.5 | 6.5 | 1.3 |
A result below one means that a single task of that value can cover more than one month. Better source discovery, reduced error, faster response and work that would otherwise be impossible can also contribute value. Use measured outcomes rather than the time displayed in the generation interface.
Common pricing mistakes
Paying for Pro before using Free
The free core is capable enough to test real tasks. Learn where it fails first.
Reading an old fixed-limit table as a promise
Allowances change. A third-party screenshot from last year is not a contract.
Treating Max as “more accurate Pro”
Max primarily buys access and capacity. A high-end model can still use a poor source or draw a wrong conclusion.
Comparing personal Pro with Enterprise Pro only by price
Enterprise includes organizational controls and data treatment. Personal Pro is not a managed company deployment.
Assuming included credits make Computer free
Credits are spendable capacity. Large or recurring tasks can exceed the allocation.
Enabling scheduled work without a budget
Each run can consume credits. Test one run, constrain cadence and set alerts.
Confusing subscription and API billing
They are separate products.
Buying annual seats before a pilot
The discount cannot recover money committed to unused capacity.
Frequently asked questions
How much is Perplexity per month?
Free costs $0. Education Pro is $10, Pro is $20, Max is $200, Enterprise Pro is $40 per user and Enterprise Max is $325 per user at standard US monthly prices.
How much is Perplexity Pro per year?
The annual Pro plan costs $200, saving $40 against twelve $20 monthly payments.
Is Perplexity Free actually useful?
Yes. It includes core cited search and limited advanced use. It is sufficient for occasional current questions and for evaluating the service.
Is Perplexity Pro worth $20?
It can be when frequent research, files, model access or creation saves at least $20 of time or improves work materially. It is not necessary for users who stay within Free.
Why is Perplexity Max so expensive?
Max targets heavy users and includes the highest access to selected research, creation, Computer and preview features. The price reflects costly use and scarcity, not guaranteed answer quality.
Does Pro include Computer credits?
At review, Pro did not include a standard recurring monthly Computer allocation, although eligible accounts could receive a one-time introductory bonus. Check the credit panel.
How much is one Perplexity credit worth?
Perplexity defines 100 credits as $1.
Do Computer credits roll over?
Recurring monthly plan credits did not roll over at review. Purchased credits followed different expiration rules.
Does Perplexity offer a student discount?
Yes. Eligible verified students and educators can purchase Education Pro for $10 per month.
Does Perplexity offer nonprofit discounts?
Perplexity says qualifying nonprofit, education and government organizations can ask about discounts. Eligibility and terms are not one universal public rate.
Can a company mix Enterprise Pro and Max seats?
Yes, according to Perplexity’s enterprise billing documentation. This can keep Max limited to roles that need it.
Is there an Enterprise trial?
Perplexity does not advertise a standard trial for Enterprise. A company should discuss a scoped evaluation or pilot with sales.
Does Enterprise include API usage?
No. API billing is separate.
Are taxes included?
Not necessarily. Checkout and the invoice determine the final tax-inclusive amount.
The bottom line
Perplexity has a sensible entry path: use Free, buy Pro when the advanced product already proves useful, and treat Max as a measured capacity purchase.
Organizations face a different decision. Enterprise Pro buys management, data treatment and internal knowledge access. Enterprise Max adds exceptional capacity and advanced controls for selected roles. Neither should be evaluated as a simple personal-plan upgrade.
Finally, budget the complete system. A seat, Computer credits and API usage can be three separate costs. The best Perplexity plan is the least expensive one that removes a real constraint while preserving the controls the data and workflow require.
