Meta is under fire again after a departing software engineer posted a viral internal protest video targeting the company’s AI policies. According to investigative platform

The video surfaced shortly after Meta reportedly cut 8,000 jobs, roughly 10 percent of its workforce. Another 7,000 employees were said to be reassigned to help train AI models. The story exposes how quickly Big Tech is restructuring around generative AI.
Farewell post becomes a protest song
Meta has long had a tradition where departing staff write a “badge post” on internal forums. Frenk took a very different route. He released a full musical parody of Don McLean’s “American Pie,” criticizing the shift from human software development to AI-driven automation.
Mother Jones reports the video immediately took off inside the company. Employees widely shared it across internal channels and on platforms like Blind, the anonymous forum popular among tech workers from Meta, Google, and others.
At the heart of the anger is a sense of replaceability. Staff say they’re training AI systems that will ultimately take over their own roles.
A former employee told Mother Jones:
“You’re told this AI agent can do your job better than you can, while you’re also asked to help train it.”
Internal AI monitoring sparks backlash
A key detail centers on an internal system called MCI, short for Model Capability Initiative. According to the report, Meta uses software that analyzes employees’ interactions with their computers, including mouse clicks and keyboard activity.
The aim is to help AI systems more closely mimic human behavior. In his protest video, Frenk explicitly references the software and urges colleagues to push back.
That taps into a wider industry debate. Major AI firms are collecting more behavioral data to train autonomous AI agents that can perform tasks end to end—from coding to customer support to document analysis.
