Cloudflare rolls out Wallets and digital IDs for AI agents

Cloudflare has unveiled Cloudflare Wallets and cloudflare.id. With these new services, the US tech company aims to give AI agents a verifiable digital identity and a secure way to make online payments. According to a Cloudflare press release, the new infrastructure lets AI agents execute transactions autonomously while human owners retain control over spending and permissions.

AI agents are rapidly evolving from simple helpers into software that can browse sites, use APIs, and make purchases on their own. That creates a new challenge, Cloudflare says: websites often can’t reliably tell whether a request is from a legitimate AI agent or a malicious bot.

Existing bot-detection tools were built to spot search engines and traditional automation. They’re a poor fit for AI agents that carry out real commercial transactions on behalf of a user or organization.

Cloudflare’s fix: give AI agents a verifiable digital identity. That lets businesses confirm which person or organization authorized an agent before any transaction goes through.

Alongside identity verification, Cloudflare is launching Cloudflare Wallets—a central digital wallet for managing stablecoins. From this main wallet, users can spin up separate virtual wallets for specific AI agents.

According to Cloudflare, these guardrails keep AI agents from operating outside preset boundaries.

The new wallets will also tie into Cloudflare’s existing Monetization Gateway, with the goal of building a full-stack payment system for both buyers and sellers using AI agents.

In the announcement, cofounder and CEO Matthew Prince says the internet is shifting from human-driven browsing to transactions increasingly executed by AI agents.

Prince argues this demands new infrastructure where identity and trust are core. Organizations must be able to verify on whose behalf an AI agent is acting before granting access or accepting a payment.

The move fits a broader push by major tech firms to build infrastructure for agentic AI—systems that don’t just follow instructions but also take autonomous actions, like making reservations, buying software, or procuring services.

That shift raises fresh questions around security, identity, and liability. Without reliable identification, it’s hard to distinguish legitimate AI agents from automated attacks or fraud.

By linking identity to payments, Cloudflare is trying to set a broadly usable standard for online services.

Cloudflare is opening reservations for Cloudflare Wallets today. Full access—including budget controls and issuing virtual wallets to AI agents—will roll out in the coming months, the company says.
