Google on Tuesday announced one of Android’s biggest AI updates yet. The company is introducing “Gemini Intelligence,” a new layer in Android that lets smartphones carry out more tasks on their own. According to Google, Android is shifting from a traditional operating system to an “intelligence system” that acts proactively on the user’s behalf.
The new features will roll out this summer first to recent Samsung Galaxy and Pixel devices. Other Android hardware will follow, including smartwatches, cars, laptops, and smart glasses. It’s Google’s next move in the AI race with Apple, Microsoft, and OpenAI, as the smartphone rapidly turns into a personal AI assistant.

Gemini moves from answers to actions

The biggest shift: Gemini won’t just answer questions—it will take actions inside apps. Google shows how users can, for example, reserve a spin bike, order textbooks from Gmail, or auto-add groceries to a shopping cart.
It’s part of a broader trend from chatbots to “agentic AI”: systems that chain multiple steps to independently achieve goals. Instead of handling single commands, Gemini is meant to understand context, open apps, gather information, and complete tasks.
Google stresses users stay in control. Gemini only acts with explicit permission and stops when the task is finished.

Your screen and photos become inputs

A standout piece of Gemini Intelligence is the mix of visual context and app automation. Google says Gemini can analyze what’s on your screen and tie actions to it.
In one demo, a shopping list in a notes app appears. Users simply hold the power button and tell Gemini to add all items to a delivery service automatically.
Images also take center stage. A user could photograph a travel brochure and ask Gemini to find a similar group trip via Expedia.
It shows Google is weaving AI deeper into Android itself. Where earlier assistants mostly reacted to voice commands, Gemini aims to read context from multiple sources at once: screen content, apps, images, location, and user behavior.

Chrome adds an AI browsing copilot

Google is bringing Gemini to Chrome on Android. Starting late June, Gemini will help with summaries, comparisons, and online research. Chrome is also getting an “auto browse” feature to automate repetitive chores like booking appointments or reserving parking.
That ups the pressure on AI browsers and AI search engines. OpenAI, Perplexity, and Microsoft are also testing browsers that perform tasks instead of just displaying information.
Strategically, this matters for Google. It helps defend its dominance in search and mobile software as generative AI increasingly becomes the front door to the internet.

Autofill evolves into a personal AI helper

Google is overhauling Autofill on Android. It will go far beyond dropping in passwords or addresses. With “Personal Intelligence,” Android can pull data from connected apps to complete complex forms automatically.
Think travel bookings, insurance forms, or in-app purchases.
Google says users must explicitly grant access before Gemini can use that data. The link between Gemini and Autofill is optional and can be turned off at any time, the company says.
Privacy remains critical. As AI systems combine more personal data, concerns grow around security, storage, and control over user information.

Google rolls out Rambler for natural speech

With “Rambler,” Google wants to make speech-to-text smarter. Built into Gboard, it turns messy, natural speech into clean written messages.
Google says Rambler can automatically remove repetitions, filler words, and on-the-fly corrections. It also supports multiple languages within a single message.
That multilingual processing is increasingly vital as large AI models go global—especially in markets where users switch languages frequently.

Android widgets go generative

Google is taking its first step toward generative interfaces. With “Create My Widget,” users can build widgets using natural language prompts.
For example, you could ask for a widget that shows weekly high-protein recipes, or a weather widget that only displays wind speed and rain for cyclists.
It sounds small, but it signals a deeper shift in how software is made. Interfaces are becoming more dynamic and personal, with AI deciding in real time what’s relevant for each user.

Android shifts from platform to AI-first layer

The announcement highlights how Google is repositioning Android for the AI era. For years, Android centered on apps and ecosystems. With Gemini Intelligence, the focus moves to AI orchestration: an intelligent layer that drives apps, information, and devices.
That strategy has big implications for developers and platform players. Apps may matter less if AI increasingly completes tasks directly, without users navigating interfaces themselves.
Google also has a lot at stake. AI is reshaping smartphones, search engines, ad models, and platform power. By embedding Gemini deeply into Android, Google is fighting to keep a central role in the next generation of computer interfaces.
