Google has officially renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook. With the rebrand, the company aims to more tightly integrate its popular AI research tool into the broader Gemini ecosystem. At the same time, Google is rolling out new features, including a secure cloud environment where the AI can independently run code for advanced data analysis. The company announced the changes this week via its Workspace blog and the official Google Blog.
The change is more than a new label. According to Google, Gemini Notebook remains a standalone product, but it will take on a more prominent role inside the Gemini app—and eventually within Google Search.
From experiment to a core part of Gemini
NotebookLM started in 2023 as the experimental Project Tailwind and has since become one of Google’s most praised AI tools for researchers, students, and businesses. Unlike general AI chatbots, it grounds its answers solely in user-provided documents, websites, PDFs, and other sources—making results easier to verify.
Google says more than 30 million users and over 600,000 organizations now rely on the service. The new name signals that the product is now fully part of the Gemini family.
Secure cloud computing unlocks deeper analysis
The biggest technical upgrade is a secure cloud computer for every notebook. With it, Gemini Notebook can independently write and run Python to analyze complex datasets, generate charts, and perform calculations based on the documents users add.
This capability is currently available to Google AI Ultra users and Workspace customers with AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access. Google says it will roll out to AI Pro users on the web in the coming weeks.
The upgrade makes it possible to automatically convert research outputs into spreadsheets, visualizations, and presentations.
Deeper integration with Gemini and Search
Google is also building a much tighter link between Gemini Notebook and the company’s other AI products.
Users can now open and sync notebooks directly within the Gemini app. Support is also coming to AI Mode in Google Search, enabling projects to be built and expanded straight from search queries.
According to Google, this should make it easier to move between AI services without re-uploading documents or losing context.
What changes for existing users?
For current NotebookLM users, very little changes. Google notes that:
- existing notebooks will be kept automatically;
- shared links will continue to work thanks to automatic redirects;
- only the name and logo will change gradually;
- mobile users may need to update their app before the new branding appears.
Why this move matters
The rebrand fits Google’s broader strategy to bring nearly all AI products under the Gemini umbrella. Bard and several AI features in Workspace previously moved under the same brand.
For users, that means standalone AI tools are becoming parts of a single, integrated platform. By linking research, data analysis, and search, Google is positioning Gemini as a complete AI workspace for both consumers and enterprises.
With Gemini Notebook, Google is moving toward AI systems that don’t just summarize information—they also run analyses autonomously and support the research process. The former experimental NotebookLM is now a central building block in Google’s AI strategy.
