OpenAI has unveiled
ChatGPT Work, a new workspace inside ChatGPT aimed at business users running complex projects with AI. Powered by the new GPT-5.6 model, it helps pull information from multiple sources and turn it into documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and analyses.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Work is available today in the desktop app. Rollout to the web version and mobile apps will follow in the coming days for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users.
What is ChatGPT Work?
With ChatGPT Work, OpenAI moves from chatbot to full-fledged AI assistant that supports end-to-end workflows. Rather than just answering questions, it can gather context from linked files, business apps, and other sources, then independently deliver a finished result.
Users can have reports drafted, generate spreadsheets, prepare presentations, and merge information from various documents. ChatGPT first outlines the approach it plans to take, and the user approves the task before the AI proceeds.
OpenAI also stresses that users can steer the process at any time and edit generated results directly within ChatGPT.
You can keep adding to the conversation—specific sources and files included. That was always possible, but the promise is that ChatGPT now handles this input more effectively.
Built on GPT-5.6
The new workspace runs entirely on GPT-5.6, OpenAI’s latest generation of language models. The company says these models handle complex, multi-step tasks better, especially when new information emerges mid-process.
OpenAI is introducing several GPT-5.6 variants, including Sol, Terra, and Luna. The company hasn’t detailed the exact differences yet, but positions them as models optimized for professional use.
Designed for business teams
OpenAI is targeting knowledge workers and teams across finance, marketing, sales, operations, engineering, and data analysis. The pitch: produce documents faster, run analyses, and combine internal knowledge without constantly switching between apps.
During the launch, OpenAI shared real-world examples from companies already using the tech. Virgin Atlantic, for instance, says competitive analyses that once took weeks now happen in hours with ChatGPT Work. These examples come from OpenAI and don’t provide an independent view of the platform’s performance.
AI race shifts to full work platforms
The launch fits a broader trend: AI providers are moving from standalone chatbots to complete work platforms. Rivals like Google and Microsoft are also building AI that connects documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and enterprise data.
Competition is moving beyond Q&A toward automating entire business workflows. For companies, the key will be how well AI taps into internal systems, existing documents, and daily processes—while keeping users in control of the final output.
