Anthropic is making a bold new move in artificial intelligence. The US AI company behind chatbot Claude doesn’t just want to supply tools to pharma anymore—it plans to develop drugs itself. With that, Anthropic steps directly into the turf of biotech firms and Big Pharma.
The announcement came at The Briefing: AI for Science, where Anthropic also unveiled Claude Science, a new AI platform to help researchers with data analysis, bioinformatics, literature reviews, and scientific visualizations. The company says AI should dramatically speed up the development of new treatments. The Verge first reported the news, which Anthropic elaborated on at the event.

From AI assistant to drug maker

It’s a clear shift for Anthropic. Claude has been known mainly as a ChatGPT rival for developers, enterprises, and knowledge workers, but the company is increasingly aiming at scientific research.
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Head of Life Sciences at Anthropic, announced a dedicated in-house drug development program. The first focus: neglected diseases—conditions most prevalent in low- and middle-income countries, where pharma often has little commercial incentive to invest in new treatments.
Anthropic argues AI can be pivotal in identifying novel molecules, analyzing biological datasets, and accelerating early-stage research—bringing scientific breakthroughs to patients faster.

Claude Science: a unified hub for research

In parallel, Anthropic introduced Claude Science, a specialized AI workspace for researchers.
The platform pulls multiple scientific workflows into one place. Researchers can analyze literature, write code, process datasets, generate figures, and run complex pipelines without constantly switching tools.
According to Anthropic, Claude Science supports more than sixty scientific data sources and can render 3D protein structures, chemical models, and genetic visualizations. Crucially, data stays within a lab’s own research infrastructure, avoiding the need to move sensitive information to external clouds.

Deepening push into healthcare

The move didn’t come out of nowhere. Since late 2025, Anthropic has been building a dedicated life sciences division. It previously launched Claude for Life Sciences, enabling tasks like bioinformatics, literature summarization, and support for regulatory and research reporting, in collaboration with partners such as Benchling, PubMed, and BioRender.
Major pharmaceutical companies are already using Claude. Firms like Novo Nordisk, AstraZeneca, and Bristol Myers Squibb deploy the technology for research, clinical documentation, and to speed up internal development.

Race heats up in AI-driven drug discovery

Anthropic is entering an increasingly crowded market.
Nearly every major AI player is investing in drug discovery. OpenAI is building models for biological research, Google DeepMind—via Isomorphic Labs—is pushing AI-led drug development, and specialists like Insilico Medicine use AI to design new candidates. Big pharma is also pouring billions into AI to streamline R&D.
Anthropic stands out by aiming to discover drugs itself, not just sell software. That could make it both a technology partner and a rival to the pharma companies already using Claude.

From model to approved medicine: a long road

Despite the hype, experts warn against overestimating AI’s impact.
AI can analyze millions of molecules, spot patterns, and shortlist promising compounds far faster than traditional methods—dramatically accelerating early stages of drug development.
But the next steps remain largely unchanged: extensive lab testing, animal studies, multiple phases of clinical trials, and final approval by regulators like the US FDA and Europe’s EMA.
That journey typically takes 10 to 15 years and costs billions. To date, no drug fully designed by AI has received final FDA approval.

A strategic shift with wide ramifications

The plan underscores Anthropic’s expanding ambitions. The company doesn’t just want to build AI models—it wants to directly fuel scientific innovation.
For the broader AI sector, it’s a telling pivot. The first wave of generative AI focused on chatbots, coding assistants, and content. Now the spotlight is moving to fields where AI can deliver concrete economic and social impact. Drug development is among the most promising.
Whether Anthropic will ultimately bring its own medicines to market remains unclear. It has yet to share details on lab work, clinical trials, or manufacturing partners. But the message is clear: the AI arms race is shifting from software to fundamental science.
