Mistral AI is a privately held French company owned by its shareholders. It was founded by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, who continue to lead the business. ASML became its largest publicly identified shareholder in September 2025 after investing €1.3 billion for approximately 11% on a fully diluted basis.
ASML does not own Mistral outright. It holds a minority stake and an advisory seat on Mistral’s Strategic Committee. Other shareholders include founders, employees and institutional investors, but Mistral does not publish a complete, continuously updated cap table.
The latest officially completed equity round valued Mistral at €11.7 billion post-money. Reports of a possible €20 billion valuation in July 2026 concerned talks with Samsung and others, not a closed round.

The founders and legal structure

Mistral says it was created in April 2023. Arthur Mensch is co-founder and chief executive, Guillaume Lample is co-founder and chief science officer, and Timothée Lacroix is co-founder and chief technology officer. Mistral’s About page confirms their current roles.
The legal business is Mistral AI, a société par actions simplifiée, or SAS, registered in Paris under number 952 418 325. Its legal notice lists €15,000 in share capital. That is a statutory accounting amount, not the company’s valuation or the money raised from investors. Read the legal notice.
A private company does not publish the shareholder detail expected from a listed business. The founders clearly lead day-to-day management, but public evidence does not establish their combined percentage or prove that they hold a majority of voting rights. “Founder-led” is supported; “founder-controlled” requires evidence that Mistral has not released.

How much of Mistral does ASML own?

ASML invested €1.3 billion as lead investor in Mistral’s September 2025 Series C. ASML’s announcement says this produced an approximately 11% share on a fully diluted basis. It also gave ASML a seat on Mistral’s Strategic Committee, held by ASML chief financial officer Roger Dassen. ASML calls the role advisory.
Reuters described ASML as Mistral’s largest shareholder after the round.
Three distinctions prevent common ownership errors:
  • approximately 11% is a minority, not outright ownership;
  • an advisory seat is not evidence of unilateral control;
  • “fully diluted” assumes options and other convertible rights are exercised.
The transaction also created an industrial partnership. Mistral and ASML plan to explore AI across ASML products, research, development and operations. ASML therefore has financial and commercial interests in Mistral, but Mistral is not its subsidiary.

Which other investors own Mistral?

Mistral’s €1.7 billion Series C announcement names existing investors DST Global, Andreessen Horowitz, Bpifrance, General Catalyst, Index Ventures, Lightspeed and NVIDIA as participants. It gives no individual percentages.
Earlier rounds broadened that investor base: a €105 million seed in June 2023, a €385 million round in December 2023 and a €600 million Series B in June 2024. Reuters reported that the Series B, led by General Catalyst, valued Mistral at €5.8 billion. Seed report; December 2023 report; Series B report.
Bpifrance’s stake supplies French public-sector-backed capital, but Mistral is not a state-owned enterprise. NVIDIA is both investor and technology supplier. Such overlapping roles are common among AI companies that need chips, compute and distribution.

Does Microsoft own Mistral?

Microsoft announced a €15 million convertible investment in 2024 alongside model distribution. Reuters reported that Microsoft did not initially hold equity and that the instrument was intended to convert later. Mistral has not disclosed Microsoft’s current percentage. Reuters’ regulatory report provides the precise history.
In July 2026, Microsoft and Mistral announced a multibillion-dollar commercial agreement covering European compute capacity and distribution through Foundry and Copilot Studio. Reuters said the new deal did not include a new equity stake. Microsoft announcement; Reuters report.
Commercial spending, distribution and ownership are different. Microsoft can be a major partner without controlling Mistral.

Is Mistral worth €20 billion?

The latest verified figure is €11.7 billion post-money from the September 2025 Series C.
In July 2026, the Financial Times and Reuters reported that Samsung was discussing an investment in a broader round that could value Mistral at roughly €20 billion. EQT’s Scaleup Europe Fund was also reportedly in talks. Negotiations were continuing and terms could change; no completed transaction had been announced by this article’s cut-off. Reuters report.
The accurate formulation is: Mistral was last officially valued at €11.7 billion and was reportedly discussing a round at about €20 billion.
Mistral also raised $830 million in debt in March 2026 for a data center near Paris. Debt supplies financing but does not establish an equity valuation or give the banks ordinary ownership. Reuters debt report.

Who controls Mistral?

The public record supports a limited conclusion: the founders run Mistral, ASML is the largest disclosed minority shareholder, and a broad investor group supplies capital. Mistral calls itself independent. No public document shows that one outside investor can direct it alone.
Independence remains relative. Private shareholder agreements may include reserved rights that are not public. Large customers can influence priorities. Mistral also depends on NVIDIA accelerators and distributes through Microsoft and other partners.
Evaluate sovereignty in four parts:
  1. corporate jurisdiction: Mistral is French;
  2. shareholder rights: no disclosed majority owner;
  3. data and deployment: regional endpoints and self-hosted models are available;
  4. supply chain: US-designed chips and global cloud partners remain important.
France’s 2026 plan to seek sovereign vendors such as Mistral for a cyber-testing program shows why these layers matter. It did not prove that every component was European. Read the live France report.

Can you buy Mistral stock?

No public Mistral ticker exists. Ordinary investors cannot buy its shares on an exchange. Buying ASML, Microsoft or NVIDIA provides only indirect exposure because Mistral is a small part of each listed company.
